We’re delighted to see the global interest in the Jersey-based Call & Check initiative, a community service for the elderly.

Call & Check, created by Islander Joe Dickinson, is a community organising scheme, where postmen and women call on elderly islanders during their regular postal round, on a daily or weekly basis as agreed with the individual. During these visits, the postal worker determines if the individual requires support from their GP, the parish or voluntary services for a range of needs including groceries, companionship, contact with tradespeople or a relative.

The importance of such an initiative for Jersey is clear; we have an ageing population, with increasing numbers of elderly people living alone. This initiative has rightly attracted global interest, and we welcome the visit to the Island from Daniel Pelino, Head of IBM’s global government business, accompanied by John Crawford, IBM’s Leader of Healthcare for Europe, who are both meeting with Jersey Post’s CEO Tim Brown and Call & Check creator Joe Dickinson.

Andy Jarrett, Director of Digital Jersey, commented:

"Digital Jersey is particularly interested in the potential digital applications which will further enable Call & Check, especially the creation of a Call & Check app to run the service and scale-up the number of applications for the platform. IBM can provide the resource and power needed to deliver this initiative on a global scale.”

We continue to support Call & Check, and look forward to the scheme’s next steps.
