Digital Jersey will be participating in a global competition for girls aged 11-18, called the Technovation Challenge, which aims to close the gender gap for women in technology and business.

In Technovation, teams of young women identify a problem in their local community, create an app to solve it, code the app, build a company to launch the app in the market and pitch their plans to experts – all in twelve weeks.

The goal of the program is to inspire girls to see themselves not just as users of technology, but as inventors, designers, builders and entrepreneurs. Technovation has reached over 2,000 girls across the country, and we want to bring it to Jersey for the first time!

However, the challenge cannot be made possible without the help and support from volunteers and of course female participants!

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

  1. Become a Mentor- a female who acts as a role model for their team. Mentors guide their teams through the Technovation curriculum alongside teachers and manage the team dynamic. Please note, mentors do not need to be programmers or app developers.
  2. Become a Teacher- can be male or female and support students in creating their apps. Please note, teachers will need sound knowledge of "PhoneGap".
  3. Be a participant –  can be any female aged 11- 18 who has an interest in technology and business.

The challenge will kick off on 10th January 2015 with a coding party which will introduce "PhoneGap", the programming language that will be used to create the app. Please note, all participants will be required to commit to 4 hours a week for twelve weeks starting w/c 12th January 2015.

Please contact Rebecca Elliott if you would like to take part in the very first Technovation Challenge here in Jersey.
