Local mobile operator Airtel-Vodafone is offering one Jersey teenage student girl the opportunity to attend a 4-day hackathon at its partners Vodafone’s head office in Paddington, including flights and accommodation.

The Code Like a Girl programme is aimed at overcoming the imbalances that exist in education and the workplace whereby women and girls are underrepresented in the field of science, technology, engineering and maths. There are only 60 places available nationally and during the 4 days between 6-9th April, girls will be taught a range of technical skills delivered by Vodafone volunteers, culminating in a competition to build their own website.

Sid Ahlawat, CEO at Airtel-Vodafone said: ‘Promoting digital learning is a key part of the Smart Guernsey programme and we are delighted to be able to offer this unique opportunity to enthuse, excite and engage local female students and raise awareness about the exciting digital careers opportunities that exist on the Island.’

Rory Steel, Head of Digital Jersey Academy, said: “with less than 7% of tech positions in Europe being filled by women, Digital Jersey really welcome and support Airtel Vodafone’s #CodeLikeAGirl campaign to help focus on the next generation of tech talent”.

Students can apply by completing an application form click here Deadline for applications is 27th February at 4pm. The winner will be decided by Airtel-Vodafone and Digital Jersey representatives and notified shortly after.
