How 9x5 Architects Are Injecting Digital Technology into the Design Process

How a Jersey-based architecture firm is using VR and AR to deliver a better service to their clients.

It’s no secret that innovation is the key to staying ahead in any industry – whether that’s a techy, digital-first industry, or a more traditional industry like architecture. For Jersey-based architecture firm 9×5 Architects, embracing digital technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) has become a cornerstone of their design process.

It all started with a project at ArtHouse Jersey, where they used VR headsets to show ArtHouse how their new exhibition would look in reality. The success of this project encouraged them to think about how else they might use digital technologies in their processes.

We met with 9×5 founder Tom McAviney, to discuss their digital approach. Watch the video below or read on to find out more.

Immersive 3D Environments > Traditional 2D Floor Plans

By integrating VR and AR into their design process, 9×5 Architects are able to offer clients a unique perspective. Instead of traditional 2D floor plans, clients can now experience their proposed designs in immersive 3D environments. This allows for better understanding and feedback, leading to more informed decisions – and ultimately, happier clients!

Better Engagement with Planners

When engaging with planners and stakeholders, visualising proposed designs in 3D helps to convey concepts more effectively. This includes showcasing the building’s massing within its context and providing detailed views of specific elements, such as tiling layouts. The result is a smoother planning process, and improved collaboration.

More Sustainable Innovation

Sustainability is a top priority for Tom. 9×5 are exploring innovative solutions to reduce carbon footprint, such as using 3D printing to create casts for ceramic tiles, allowing them to be locally sourced, thereby minimising the emissions associated with transportation.

Culture of Collaboration

Through partnerships with organisations like Digital Jersey, 9×5 are continuously seek out opportunities to leverage emerging technologies. Cross-disciplinary discussions and knowledge sharing play a crucial role in driving their progress and pushing them beyond traditional design methodologies.

By embracing innovation and collaboration, 9×5 Architects are not only enhancing design capabilities but also driving sustainability and efficiency in the built environment. Digital Jersey’s mission to support businesses like 9×5 Architects is exemplified through this forward-thinking approach to architecture.
