In October 2018 the Island of Jersey played host to a full week of exciting and innovative tech events, showcasing and celebrating the best of tech whilst providing networking, learning, business and social opportunities.

Join us as we take a look back at Jersey TechWeek 2018

The inaugural Jersey TechWeek saw experts from around the globe wow local audiences with talks at our Fintech, Digital Health and IoT Days. We also celebrated the best of local tech with the IoT Hackathon and the first Jersey TechAwards, recognising Jersey’s top digital talent, creativity and entrepreneurship.

IoT Hackathon - Island of Things: dream it, pitch it, do it

Kicking off the week was a two-day creative IoT marathon, sponsored by JT, where participants of all skill levels were invited to develop their IoT-related ideas and pitch to a respected industry panel. Congratulations to our 1st place winner, Rory Steel, and all other prize winners.

Internet Of Things Day

Monday’s focus was IoT, co-sponsored by C5 Alliance and JEC.

As one of the best-connected places on the planet, Jersey is in a unique position to explore the impacts of increasing digitisation on society and the economy. A focus on data resulting from our unrivalled connectivity presents an opportunity for Jersey to build a physical, economic and social Digital Twin of the island. An island Digital Twin would enable public and private entities to combine data for scenario planning leading to more informed decision making and public consultation, as well as paving the way for future data-intensive businesses.

Throughout IoT Day we examined how Jersey could position itself in order to grasp the opportunities afforded by the fourth industrial revolution, supported by expert talks from:

  • Joe Dignan, Special Adviser for IoT, Digital Jersey
  • Andy Stanford-Clark, Chief Technology Officer (UK & Ireland), IBM
  • Dan Byles, VP & Head of Corporate Development, Living PlanIT
  • Chris Ambler, Chief Executive, Jersey Electricity plc
  • Michael Bateman, Head of Bespoke Development, C5 Alliance
  • Jason Plent, Founder & CEO, IoT Systems Group
  • Phil Male, Chairman, JT
  • Brian Matthews, Head of Transport & Innovation
  • Sean McCarthy, Head of Market Facing Problems, Satellite Applications Catapult
  • Julie Alexander, Director of Urban Development, Siemens
  • Andrew Penney, Business Development Manager, CityZenith

Digital Health Day

Governments across the globe have struggled to find ways to introduce tech to deliver better, safer care to patients; it’s not just about ‘computerising’ what we have, it’s about making the most of data to improve services and the way in which citizens interact with them.

Tuesday’s Digital Health Day, sponsored by TSG and Zuri, examined current trends in the sector and a range of speakers discussed how Jersey was the ideal testbed to trial new products.

At our Digital Health Day we heard views on ‘health and care digitisation’ on both a national and local scale, and how some of the ‘bleeding edge’ technologies such as VR, AR and AI are solving real-world problems. Our range of expert speakers included:

  • Andrew Frith, Special Adviser for Health, Digital Jersey
  • Will Smart, Chief Information Officer, NHS England
  • Andy Delaney / Danny Bannister, CEO / Founder TSG
  • Cheryl Kenealy, Managing Director, Zuri
  • Paul Henderson, Director of Health Data Analytics, KPMG
  • Ricky Magalhaes, Managed Security Services Director, Logicalis
  • Dr Mark Davies, Chief Medical Officer, IBM
  • Dr Austin Gibbs, Director, Immersion.je
  • Guillaume Jarai, Lead Engineer, Oreka Ingeniere
  • Jeff Hanson, VP, IBM Watson Health, with Gary Stewart, Director / Ben Symonds, Consultant, NexusTech (Jersey)
