BIMA D-Day

Dates
  • 13th November 2018
    9:00am - 5:00pm

Location:

Fort Regent

Women In Tech, Jersey, are running an Island wide BIMA Digital Day (known as BIMA D Day).

The only digital initiative of its kind, BIMA D Day gives 13-16 year olds an insight into the world of digital careers and is completely free to take part.

We are delighted that Beaulieu, Le Quennevais, Victoria College and Jersey College have already shown interest and some have already signed up to participate. We would like to encourage more local secondary schools to get involved in this unique one day event to raise awareness of the fantastic opportunities that are available for young people in digital.  We typically ask that schools allow approximately 20 students between the ages of 13-16 to attend.

Industry professionals will be running the day, together with the help of BIMA.  However, additional support is required and we are asking for at least 1 teacher per 20 students to come and cheer on and help throughout the day.

During the day each group of students will complete one of three sponsored challenges, which will test a number of different skills.  The aim being to show students how their skills may be suited to a digital career. Students will receive support and advice from industry professionals to help them complete their challenge.  They will also have the opportunity to talk to them about their roles and how they could get involved with that particular role or industry in the future.  At the end of the day, each team will present the ideas for their challenge in a Dragon’s Den style pitch.

As an example of the type of challenge that may be set, one of last years’ was to “create an innovative app to help pet owners improve their petshealth and help them socialise.”

This task was sponsored by LV insurance, so those involved in this challenge looked at creating brand campaigns for their new app, as well as how it could integrate with LV’s current insurance market.

Teams from each of the schools will compete locally for the chance to win a number of prizes.  They will also compete nationally, against schools in the UK. The national winners will be crowned BIMA D Day champions and awarded £500 cash for their school!

It’s a fun, interactive and stimulating day that all students will remember and that will hopefully encourage greater uptake of digital careers.

Venue : Fort Regent

Date : 13th November 2018

Time : 9am until 5pm (the end time may be slightly earlier, depending on the number of students attending)

Ages : 13 – 16 (open to male and female students)

Transport : Students can be dropped straight to Fort Regent with a Woman In Tech representative on the door from 8:30am until 5:30pm. If it is easier for you to transport the students from school on minibuses this would be great to keep them all in one place and cause minimal disruption to parents. If buses are needed, please let us know in advance – depending on sponsorship, we may be able to help supply these.

Attire: Students will be asked to remain in their school uniforms / tracksuits throughout the day. This is to make it easier for staff members to keep an eye on the students from their particular school and to help when organising. (Should more funding be available, we may look to purchase some branded t-shirts before the day to wear)

Lunch : Students & volunteers will be asked to bring their own lunch and snacks.  Water will be available on site all day. If we have the sponsorship to provide lunch for the students, we will let you know in advance so that dietary requirements can be taken into account. All of the students and volunteers will remain in Gloucester Hall throughout the day to minimise movement around Fort Regent.
